Say Goodbye to the Winter Blues with a Heated Tile Floor!

November 26, 2013 by · Leave a Comment

Winter is officially here.  For some that may bring some excitement given that we’re now entering the holiday season.  However, for others, the weather and cold this time of year can lead to the blues.  One reason for this is that people often have to stay indoors much more than other times of the year.  Believe it or not, scientists have actually given this phenomenon a name: seasonal affective disorder (SAD).  Common symptoms of SAD include feelings of sadness, loss of energy, inability to concentrate, and gravitation towards “comfort foods” that are high in sugar and carbohydrates.

Luckily, there are many different ways to cope with the symptoms of SAD.  Doctors often recommend eating healthy and counseling as some options.  Another powerful option is to renovate your home.  Due to the fact that you may be spending more time inside, it’s the best time of year to make your home more comfortable and hospitable.

Home renovations don’t have to be extremely expensive and time consuming.  One option is to simply give a makeover to one or two rooms in the home.  Perhaps one of the most overlooked rooms in the home is the bathroom.  However, this shouldn’t be the case because we use our bathrooms many times throughout the day.  It’s also a room that guests frequent.

A bathroom makeover can be simple, fun, and inexpensive.  Changes can include a new paint job or choosing a new shower curtain and towel set.  Other changes include opting for a new toilet or having a new shower installed.  It’s also fun to find little trinkets and decorations at your local store that fit in with the overall seasonal look.

If you’re looking to make some more significant changes, there is always the option of installing new flooring.  Selecting new tile or wood can add some new flair to the bathroom.  While in the process of that, you can also install hydronic floor heating.  Hydronic floor heating is a wonderful option in the winter, particularly for the bathroom.  Hydronic floor heating simply heats a room like a regular heater, except it works from the ground up.  Radiant heating is more energy efficient and works best in a small space like a bathroom.

The bathroom can become a dreaded place during those cold winter months.  There are few things worse than getting out of your cozy bed in the winter and stepping into an ice cold bathroom.  Luckily, that’s no longer an issue with the installation of a heated tile floor.  Getting out of the shower will become a pleasant experience once you have hydronic floor heating in your bathroom.

These simple changes in your bathroom or other rooms in your home can help you to beat the dreadful symptoms of SAD.

We all want our bedrooms to have a certain amount of style. In fact, a lot of us want our rooms to have a lot of style. But there is only so much to do, even with all the options you have. One, however, you may have overlooked is your bed. While there are all the opportunities standard bedding provides, don’t overlook some additions that can really add style.

The top of your bed can be seen as the perfect option for displaying specific style. Duvet cover sets, for example, come in an array of styles and materials that you can use to match your room’s style or take it to the next level. Quilts are another option you can throw on top of your bedding to get more from the area. Although they may seem old fashioned (which might be the look you’re going for), there’s still plenty you can do to modernize it.

If you’ve covered your bedding, you may have already addressed the option of extra pillows. But have you really explored all the choices that come with it? Pillows are simple pieces of bedding, but there’s plenty they can do in terms of style. They come in all different shapes, you know, not just the standard rectangles. Use that to add some character to your look.

There are numerous other options, especially as they relate to the actual bed itself, for increasing your room’s style. Just make sure whatever you choose doesn’t interfere with your ability to sleep.

Where Did the Idea for Heated Floors Come From?

November 17, 2013 by · Leave a Comment

Too many, the idea of in floor heating seems like a true modern marvel. In fact, many don’t realize there are DIY solutions out there that make the technology affordable and realistic for most everyone. Furthermore, the idea of the heated floor is actually thought to have originated with the ancient Greeks.

Actually, though the Greeks may have thought of it, the Romans are believed to be the first ones to have implemented it with their hypocaust system. It was a simple enough process. Ceramic tile floors were supported by columns below. These columns could be treated much like chimneys with charcoal, brushwood and coal used to provide the heat to the floors above.

Interestingly, with the fall of the Roman Empire, this process died out. Central heating, as we know it, would not be discovered for another 1,500 years. The Koreans did have a similar system though. To fight off temperatures that could reach 20 degrees below zero, Koreans as far back as the 5th century built their homes on a “warm stone” and used warm water to provide sufficient heat.

Floor heating has come a long way since then. Nowadays, you can heat any room in your home with specially made tile. In fact, you can even install it yourself to save extra money. With winter on its way, this might be the year you make such a brilliant thing of the past be something you use in the future.

The Benefits of a Foam Mattress

November 14, 2013 by · Leave a Comment

There are many different uses and purposes of foam today such as sofa foam and acoustic foam. Perhaps one of the best uses of foam is to use it to make mattresses. Study after study shows the importance of getting a good night’s sleep and a huge factor in that is having the right mattress.

Memory foam mattresses provide many advantages over other types of mattresses which include:

• Custom comfort: Memory foam mattresses are very sensitive to body temperature. Due to this, these mattresses actually bend and change according to each person’s individual body height and weight. This can help achieve a better night’s sleep because it’s as if the mattress is custom-built for each person.

• Relieves pain: Memory foam mattresses can help to relieve body pains, aches, and soreness. The memory mattress works by displacing pressure throughout the length of a person’s body. Due to the fact that painful body parts typically hold a higher temperature, the mattress adjusts and aids in helping the body recover more quickly.

• Prevents back problems: Mattresses are often guilty of contributing to back problems. With memory foam mattresses that’s not typically an issue for a reason. Memory foam mattresses help the sleeper maintain the proper sleeping posture and alignment of the spine. Sofa foam replacement is another option to help with posture and back issues.

• Allergy relief: One of the biggest culprits of nighttime allergies is traditional mattresses. Memory foam mattresses are made of polyurethane foam which is constructed of inorganic fibers. Unlike other mattresses, mattresses made with these special fibers can prevent the collection of dust mites. Studies have shown that a typical mattress can double in weight within a few years due to dust mites. Luckily, this isn’t an issue with memory foam mattresses.

• Health solutions: Memory foam mattresses combined with memory foam pillows have been shown to improve various sleep issues. Sleep apnea is a serious issue in which breathing is either interrupted or becomes incredibly shallow during sleep. Sleep apnea can lead to serious health issues including diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and weight gain. Memory foam pillows can help alleviate this issue because they provide the right amount of elevation to the head during sleep which ensures a healthy breathing pattern.

All of the benefits of memory foam mattresses can help contribute to a more peaceful and restful night’s sleep. Getting a good night’s sleep is crucial in order to maintain good health and preserve a high level of energy. Therefore, it seems memory foam mattresses are the mattress of choice!

Attractive Pool Fencing

November 13, 2013 by · Leave a Comment

Having a pool at your home can be a wonderful luxury that allows for relaxation and family togetherness. A swimming pool can also help to increase the value of your property. However, one of the most crucial aspects of being a pool owner is taking the proper safety precautions. Due to the drowning risks involved, every pool owner should install a fence or gate. Many different countries even require it by law because of all the occurrences of accidental drowning. Unfortunately, many of the pool fences and gates on the market are very unattractive. Some pool owners might opt out of installing a fence if they feel it’s going to make their backyard an eye sore.

Today there are many fencing options that are more pleasing to the eye. One such option is to install a glass pool fence. There are businesses that install these stunning fences all over the world. Whether you’re looking for glass pool fences in Sydney or nearly anywhere else, there is plenty of selection today.

Believe it or not, glass fencing is usually built to last and is much sturdier than it might appear. Many glass fences require little to no maintenance as well which is a definite benefit. Frameless glass fences and semi frameless glass fences both offer an incredibly chic and minimalist-style look to your pool area. Semi frameless glass fencing and frameless glass fences are flexible and versatile. These fences can be installed anywhere in the yard and typically require minimal regular cleaning. Maintenance doesn’t require much else.

These fences can range in price. These styles go quite nicely with any style of landscaping compared to wood, aluminum, or mesh fences. These traditional fences aren’t often as attractive as glass fences. However, glass fences are generally more costly than their counterparts. Luckily, there is another option.

Combination fencing is a great idea for those who desire the elegant look of glass, but are looking for a more affordable price. Combination fences offer glass and aluminum together. These fences are still very eye-catching, but they often come at a cheaper price.

Besides the beautiful appearance of glass fences, they can also be safer. If you can easily see the pool area, it’s easier to monitor the activity in and around the pool. This can be a significant advantage for families with small children. Another benefit of these fences is that the glass can help to block out wind, leaves, and dirt from entering the pool area.
