How to Install a Safe in the Home (Where, and general tips)

May 16, 2016 by · Leave a Comment

No matter how secure your home, it’s impossible to prevent unauthorized entry and access altogether, so it’s vital to have a burglary safe so that you can ensure the safety of your most important items. A quality safe offers protection from both criminals and house fires, but you must set up and install them correctly to get the best results.

Buying a Safe

Buying high security safes is not to be taken lightly, and you must ensure any safe you use can protect your property adequately. A reliable safe will cost a little bit more than its standard counterparts, but you can reduce the cost by finding quality used safes. Always ensure you check the fire rating of each safe so that you know how long it will protect your items in the event of a house fire.

Installing Your Safe

Picking a good location for your safe is essential, and the wrong location will increase the odds of losing your valuables. For the best results, find a place that is out of sight but easy for you to access. Burglars have been known to steal safes and try to crack them in a secure location, so you must bolt your safe to the ground so that you can prevent this problem. Some people opt to secure their safe to a wooden floor, but while this will buy you some time, it does not offer dependable protection. When you want a safe to be as secure as possible, you must bold it to a cement foundation.

The Various Types of Portable Air Conditioners

February 3, 2016 by · Leave a Comment

Portable air conditioning units have given homeowners many reasons to rejoice. For one, they are a cost-efficient substitute to the money-milking central air conditioning units that most houses have already installed. They also provide a wide range of options that benefit the user such as a built-in humidifier, a supplemental cooling sequence, or even heat pumps.

Air-Cooled

Otherwise known as a spot cooler, these portable air conditioners commonly come with an “air-cooled” system which is generally ideal for a typical home. Air-cooled units provide flexibility, portability, and a high-powered system that can cool down a room in a short amount of time.

Today, there are a wide range of portable air conditioners being sold but air-cooled units still remain the heavy favorite out of the other systems. However, specialty systems have also increased in popularity due to their importance and remain a fast growing product on the market.

Water-Cooled

There are certain applications that air-cooled systems can’t be used for. For example, a sterile environment such as a surgery suite can’t allow exhaust air. In addition, the air that circulates through the system needs to have a HEPA filter in order to maintain the sterility of the delicate room.

One of the problems that manufacturers had was to develop a product that circulates the air in a cooling loop. Water-cooled units were developed with a dedicated closed-loop system that can be used in environments meant to stay germ-free. Hospitals have begun to use water-cooled air conditioning units because of their excessive capacity to keep their surgical team cool during operations. Additionally, surgical units contain all of the items needed to operate a water-cooled system such as a water source and a drain.

Water-to-Air

The fusion of both air-cooled and water-cooled units, these systems provide the comforts and functionalities of both types. By utilizing a heat exchanger to accept the surrounding heat, the air-handling unit cools it down and provides cool evaporated air to the area. Similar to a water-cooled unit, it only circulates interior air through the evaporator.

The heated air is ejected through a ventilation tube that can run outside. The cooled air is pushed back into the line coming from the central unit and the process then repeats itself, creating a concentrated form of ambient air to the designated area. These units are essentially more high powered than standard systems and remain consistently cool even at high temperatures.

How to Glue Your Cushion Foam Together

August 27, 2015 by · Leave a Comment

If you are looking to extend the length of your sofa cushions because you bought the wrong pieces of foam that end up being too small, you can glue the two together. By doing so, you will save the trouble of having to go through ordering another piece of foam and also save money. Here is a quick guide on how you can quickly get this process done with both small and large foam pieces.

Glue2

Before you begin gluing, make sure that the area that you plan to work in is covered with some newspapers or tarp to prevent any damage from the spray adhesive.

For Smaller Attaching to Larger

The first thing you’re going to want to do is to take your two pieces of foam and cover the adhering pieces with spray adhesive. A couple of layers of adhesive should do the trick. Following that, wait about 10-15 seconds, this allows the glue to become tacky.

Your next step will be to align the two pieces of foam that need to be glued together. Once you have them in place, go ahead and firmly press them together for about 5 seconds. Be sure not to let the foam sink in as it can create problems with the placement. Once the pieces of foam are sticking together allow them to dry for about 10 minutes, and your foam will be ready for placement.

For Larger Foam (Such as Couch Cushions)

While the method for large foam pieces is similar to the one mentioned previously, there are some different techniques that you should apply to ensure that the glue stays on.

Follow the same method that was listed above when you spray your adhesive on your foam. After the foam is covered with the glue, you will want to firmly press the two large pieces together. Next, instead of holding the two pieces together, you’re going to want to pinch the foam right where it has been glued. Try to pinch the foam with a good amount of force, but not an overwhelming amount because the foam will end up ripping. Once the top of your foam cushion has been pinched throughout, flip it over to the other side and repeat the process. This is to ensure the glue meshes with both ends of the foam. Because you are dealing with larger pieces, less force is required to separate the two because of the weight of their back end. Allow the glue to dry, and your large foam cushions are ready for use.

Ways to Repair Your Water-Damaged Home

April 20, 2015 by · Leave a Comment

Everyone wants to protect their investments, and there are fewer investments that require more preparation and cause more anxiety than property ownership. If your home or property has been subjected to significant damage from humidity or water, it’s important to take the correct precautions to ensure water damage restoration prevents mold and fixes the problem. Remember that if the original long term problem is not addressed, you might suffer long-term damage. What follows are some steps and precautions to consider as you investigate the paths to water damage restoration.

Prepare Adequately

When assessing a property’s water damage, you should first follow a few general precautions to ensure your own safety. If your property was damaged by flooding, make sure you turn off the property’s power and gas before entering it. Be careful not to inhale or drink water while inspecting the property—sewage or otherwise tainted water carries contaminants that could be hazardous to your health. Wash your face, hands, eyes, and mouth after inspecting the property; use disinfectants when possible. As a final precaution, photograph the property damage as thoroughly as you can—the documentation of the damage may prove crucial for insurance negotiations.

Evaluate Damaged Building Materials

Buildings and structures are made out of a variety of materials, and each material reacts differently when exposed to water for a significant period of time. Insulation, for example, retains water well, and can cause further damage if not immediately removed. Plaster walls can be salvaged if damaged by clean water, while drywalls might require complete replacement if exposed, if even for a short period of time. Do you need fan coil units to regulate temperature? That can be an issue in environments that must remain temperature regulated.

In short, a property is an ecosystem of materials that can be thrown drastically out of balance when exposed to a foreign element such as water. The priority, in this case, is to remove said element from the equation. If possible, open windows, wash down wooden surfaces, clean out mud, and drain water from the walls (while being sure to avoid electrical wiring). Choose carefully how you decide to dry wood floors, as they are prone to warping if dried too rapidly.

Consider Dehumidification

Once the area has been investigated, evaluated, and cleaned, it’s time to consider dehumidification as a solution to moisture removal. Portable dehumidifiers prevent water damage, help eliminate odors, stop mold from growing, and come in a large variety of sizes.

Smart Technology in the Home

January 13, 2014 by · Leave a Comment

Have you heard of the Internet of things? It will be the wave of the future, especially in the home. Technologists are imagining a future where all things are connected, and one device will control elements of your home.

Soon we will be able to open our garage door from our smart phone, monitor our home’s security from our desktop computers, and set our home to welcome us with a musical overture when we arrive from a busy day. One California Water Heater company suggests that tankless water heaters will even eliminate our need to wait for hot water. These new advances will help improve our quality of life, and make our homes smarter.

Smart Stove

Using an integrated Android tablet, your stove now offers a range of options to help you cook at home or while you’re out and about. The new debut at CES 2014 shows how users can adjust the internal temperature from a smart phone, or view a cooking video while they work on the stove top. Available in both gas and electric, this stove is one of a few gadgets that will upgrade your kitchen to the future.

Smart Fridge

Have you ever been at the grocery store and realized that you don’t know whether you have that essential ingredient? Imagine being able to view your grocery list, which catalogues everything in your fridge. Early iterations of the product were mostly unsuccessful, but the newer versions incorporate more handy technology. Wi-Fi connectivity lets you use apps to determine your family’s meal plan. Newer fridges even feature a function to deliver hot, filtered water straight from the tap.

Controlling Temperature

Smart thermostats are the new rage for home improvement. These intelligent devices learn your preferences and make adjustments according to your desires. For example, a smart thermostat would know that the mornings are cold and would adjust heating before you wake up so you can feel warm and refreshed. Buy a tankless water heater to improve the rate at which your house warms water. These improvements end up saving you money in the long term, and you have the ability to over write these settings at any point.

Smart Beds

Smart beds will utilize technology to make adjustments that will improve your sleeping habits. One of the bed’s basic uses is to adjust firmness of each side, so you and your partner sleep comfortably. A built in ambient light provides the room with low-light sleep conditions, and built in hydraulics can even adjust your partner’s head height to prevent snoring.

How to Purchase Winter-Friendly Commercial Garage Doors

December 27, 2013 by · Leave a Comment

The Internet has created a need for warehouse-based stores, and companies like Amazon are rising to meet the challenge. Protecting these distribution houses from the elements becomes extremely important if you don’t want to lose any of your stock. The warehouse door is a weak link in the chain of insulation, and it’s often overlooked as a source for insulation and protection from the elements.

How Doors are Made

The actual make up of the warehouse garage door greatly affects its ability to insulate your space. Materials vary, as does the level of thermal resistance. This measurement, called the “R-Value,” looks at the door’s ability to resist heat flow. This is where the type of insulation becomes important:

  • Polystyrene insulation are on the lower range of the R-Value
  • Polyurethane doors offer twice the insulation of a polystyrene door and is recommended in severe winter weather conditions

Aside from the door’s thermal rating, it’s important that the installation does not allow excess air through small cracks in the door frame. Usually a seal, called an “astragal,” helps create an airtight space when the door closes.

Wood vs. Metal Doors

Wooden doors are more common at the consumer level, but commercial garage doors are typically made of metal. Wooden doors are more susceptible to the elements, and a metal door is more likely to stand up to day after day of industrial usage. The other advantage to owning a metal door is the paintjob you can apply, which is useful for branding or to match the colors of your building. It’s also easier to modify an industrial metal door if you want windows or some other custom installation.

The Ideal Door Setup

The ideal set up for commercial roll up doors is typically a 26 gauge metal unit. Polyurethane is recommended, but remember that insulation works both ways, so if extreme heat is an issue then polystyrene may be a better choice. An R-Value of 8 will work in most climates, and two layers of steel will be sufficient for many installations.

Other Tips

Cold storage may be required if you’re holding vegetation or food products. Ammonia freezers are generally cheaper than their Freon counterparts, and insulation is equally important for keeping the cold temperature inside. Don’t forget also that there are regulations that control what temperature food must be stored at to maintain freshness.

The Benefits of a Foam Mattress

November 14, 2013 by · Leave a Comment

There are many different uses and purposes of foam today such as sofa foam and acoustic foam. Perhaps one of the best uses of foam is to use it to make mattresses. Study after study shows the importance of getting a good night’s sleep and a huge factor in that is having the right mattress.

Memory foam mattresses provide many advantages over other types of mattresses which include:

• Custom comfort: Memory foam mattresses are very sensitive to body temperature. Due to this, these mattresses actually bend and change according to each person’s individual body height and weight. This can help achieve a better night’s sleep because it’s as if the mattress is custom-built for each person.

• Relieves pain: Memory foam mattresses can help to relieve body pains, aches, and soreness. The memory mattress works by displacing pressure throughout the length of a person’s body. Due to the fact that painful body parts typically hold a higher temperature, the mattress adjusts and aids in helping the body recover more quickly.

• Prevents back problems: Mattresses are often guilty of contributing to back problems. With memory foam mattresses that’s not typically an issue for a reason. Memory foam mattresses help the sleeper maintain the proper sleeping posture and alignment of the spine. Sofa foam replacement is another option to help with posture and back issues.

• Allergy relief: One of the biggest culprits of nighttime allergies is traditional mattresses. Memory foam mattresses are made of polyurethane foam which is constructed of inorganic fibers. Unlike other mattresses, mattresses made with these special fibers can prevent the collection of dust mites. Studies have shown that a typical mattress can double in weight within a few years due to dust mites. Luckily, this isn’t an issue with memory foam mattresses.

• Health solutions: Memory foam mattresses combined with memory foam pillows have been shown to improve various sleep issues. Sleep apnea is a serious issue in which breathing is either interrupted or becomes incredibly shallow during sleep. Sleep apnea can lead to serious health issues including diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and weight gain. Memory foam pillows can help alleviate this issue because they provide the right amount of elevation to the head during sleep which ensures a healthy breathing pattern.

All of the benefits of memory foam mattresses can help contribute to a more peaceful and restful night’s sleep. Getting a good night’s sleep is crucial in order to maintain good health and preserve a high level of energy. Therefore, it seems memory foam mattresses are the mattress of choice!
